BULGARIA DOES NOT ALLOW REGISTRATION OF MACEDONIA ASSOCIATION OMO ILINDEN

Blagoevgrad District Court again failed to register Macedonian association OMO Ilinden as a legal entity with a nonprofit purpose.

.The court ruling said that the registration of the association would be against the unity of the nation because the association wanted "in preschool education Macedonians to learn in Macedonian language".

The statute of the association reads to protect "Macedonian intangible cultural heritage that is susceptible to etnocit by Bulgarian cultural institutions." Members of this association wanted to organize "symposia and press conferences on the topic of forced assimilation, discrimination and xenophobia against the Macedonians in Bulgaria". The statute specifically emphasizes that OMO Ilinden is "ethnic Macedonian organization originating from the borders of Bulgaria."

"The Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria prohibits organizations whose activity is directed against the unity of the nation and prohibits organizations that inflame national and ethnic hatred," the judges stated in refusing registration. In rejecting the court emphasized a large number of disagreements with the Bulgarian legislation, which does not allow the organization to be registered in the register of non-profit associations, - Bulgarian media
