The Path of Alexander of Macedonia Through Macedonia Presented

The route Macedonian King Alexander III of Macedonia passed with his army in 335 BC on the return from the Danube campaign was passing through 18 present communities in the Republic of Macedonia. The reconstruction was made by Prof. Dr. Victor Lilcic, current director of the Directorate for protection of cultural heritage, and it is a result of his field and cabinet archaeological research in the past 40 years.

The route that Alexander passed over the territory of today’s Republic of Macedonia, from north to south, was presented by Lilcic today. It was made in an expert manner during a lecture supported by the visual presentation of the locations of former ancient cities and kingdoms (kingdom Agrijani Paeonia, Pelagonia ...) and archeological sites were money from the Macedonian Kingdom are found.

To determine the route Lilcic was guided by modest data the chronicler Arian wrote in the book "Anabaza" which then he confirmed by his research.

“My research in a very small part relies on the sources, and in most of it in the archeology, landscape and numismatics. There are other allegations, but for the science the most reliable are the coins from the Macedonian kings, especially the coins of King Alexander that we find on the route”, said Lilcic in a statement for the media.

The young king Alexander who had just ascended the throne of Macedonia in 335 BC wanted to go to the East to find the point of the sunrise. As a great strategist, he previously had to settle the situation in the kingdom of Macedonia, which was being attacked from the north (from Triballis Iliri ...). That was the reason for his Danube campaign.

According to the reconstruction, Alexander entered the territory of the Republic of Macedonia at Deve Bair, wandering through the valleys of the Kriva Reka, along Vardar (Axius) Valley of the river Crna (Erigon) ... close to 30 cities and as many fortresses that gravitated towards the route.

“It is a matter of 18 current municipalities through which this way was passing, starting from Kriva Palanka through Kratovo, Mlado Nagoricani, Sveti Nikole etc... The first major town on that route as I think he visited is the city of Gradiste, Mlado Nagoricane, then Bilazora. He didn’t go to Astibo. I think it was not on his way. Then, he proceeded to Stobi then upriver Erigon through Mariovo he went in the Bitola area. There is one important town here - Monastery about which I think it is Antanija city - center of Antani tribe. Then, there is a problem related to the Bitola area - whether he passed through Gradiste Crnobuki, the ancient city Link, which was the center of the kingdom of Lynkestes or went down in Kastoria. I think he went to Ohrid. Lychnidos was the last bigger early ancient city center of civilization in our Republic of Macedonia. Then he went to the city Pelion for which I think is the site Gradiste Selce on the upper course of the river Shkumbina, southwest of the lake Ohrid”, said Lilcic.

He is fascinated by the fact that the king of Macedonia on that road of 1,700 km, about 300 km passed in today's Republic of Macedonia, and believes it should be popularized.

“We have many topics that come from the depths of our historical and cultural history and prehistory. To us as Macedonians and a country which is simply called Republic of Macedonia, there is a link with the name with the ancient kingdom of Macedonia. This kingdom was living organism - throbbing, experienced strong expansion over the centuries and spread everywhere. We are interested in how we are associated with the greatest leader of the ancient kingdom, the most famous one, the man the whole world study about. His heart pulsed in the country which is now called the Republic of Macedonia. He passed through with the army in 335 BC and seen our lands and rivers have seen cities contacted people who friendly welcomed him and it is something we need. We can turn this road into remarkable cultural tourist highway”, said Lilcic.
